Nobody Expects You To Deal With Retirement All By Yourself
Picture the scene. You see a man or woman climbing up a ladder and stepping into a burning building while everyone else is running out. Imagine a man standing with a gun shooting randomly at people, and some particular persons walking towards him instead of running in the opposite direction. Imagine needing assistance after a particularly bad car accident and someone tending to you and making sure that you are okay. We tend to take our emergency first responders for granted because we see them every day and we have high expectations of them. They certainly do love their jobs, but they go through a lot both physically and mentally in order to be able to do the job well.
Having to deal with all of the stress by themselves can prove to be difficult and many first responders do not turn to their spouses because they don’t want to burden them with it. This is why it is essential that these workers get firefighter retirement counselling whenever they need it. Thankfully, there are providers out there whose job it is to help people when they need it the most. If you are not sure about the services that they offer, then maybe the following can help.
- They point you in the right direction – Many first responders like firefighters, find it incredibly difficult to deal with the stresses of the job and then when it comes to retirement, they are just not ready to quit. They feel that they have a lot more to offer the job and so they fight retirement and this makes it very difficult for them to accept it. They find it difficult to step away from a job that has been bringing them excitement and adrenaline filled challenges for almost 30 years. It’s difficult to walk away from something like this and so counselling is there to point you in the right direction.
- Assistance with health issues – It is just human nature to stop taking care of yourself and staying in good physical shape if your lifestyle doesn’t require it. Firefighters need to be in top physical shape in order to do their job, but when they retire, all they need to be able to do is to sit in a chair and work the remote control. They frequently neglect their health and as they get older, they might find it difficult to deal with these physical changes. Counselling will help you to prepare by encouraging you to follow an exercise routine and to eat healthily.
It seems fair that someone who was given so much of themselves to others should be able to get some assistance and counselling if they need it.
